9 December 2009
LIVERPOOL 1 (Benayoun 43)
FIORENTINA 2 (Jorgensen 63, Gilardino 92)
Benayoun headed in a Gerrard free kick. Fiorentina were rewarded for their patient build-up play with the equaliser. Santana dummied a Montolivo centre, Gilardino poked the ball forward to Jorgensen who beat Diego with a low, first time shot into the corner. Vargas out muscled Darby on the left flank before centring for Gilardino to tap in the winner.
Of the Italian sides left in the competition Fiorentina are by far the best equipped. They've got a great coach and a good mix of youth and experience. Their defence can be suspect at times but I imagine that will be addressed in January.
Attendance : 40,863
Assists : Gerrard (fk), Gilardino, Vargas
LYON 4 (Gomis 25, Bastos 45, Pjanic 59, Cissokho 76)
DEBRECEN 0
Pantics spilled a pathetic Govou shot straight into the path of Gomis, 1-0. Bastos doubled Lyon's lead just before the break, angling Pjanic's free kick into the bottom left corner. The magnificently gifted Pjanic pulled clear from a body of players to poke in Bastos' cross. Cissokho cut in from the left and beat Pjanic with a low bouncing drive.
Attendance : 39,743
Assists : n/a, Pjanic, Bastos, Cris
DYNAMO KYIV 1 (Milevskiy 2)
BARCELONA 2 (Xavi 33, Messi 86)
Milevski apparently got the faintest of touches to a free kick, Valdes seemed to catch the ball then dropped it into his own net. Dreadful mistake. Barca scored a wonderful equaliser. Ibrahimovic and Messi worked the ball out wide to Keita and Xavi slid his perfectly weighted first time centre past Shovkovskiy. Messi hit the winner five minutes from time, a left footed free kick which crashed in off the underside of the crossbar.
Attendance : 15,598
Assists : Shevchenko, Keita, Messi (won fk)
INTER 2 (Eto'o 31, Balotelli 64)
RUBIN 0
The much maligned Mario Balotelli demonstrated his staggering talent to inspire Inter into the last 16. Zanetti's tenacity on the left flank forced a mistake by a defender, Balotelli flicked the ball back to Eto'o who absolutely hammered it past Ryzhikov. Mid way though the second half Balotelli scored with a brilliant 30 yard free kick.
Mourinho on Balotelli after the match "God gave him the talent. I don't know if he's ready or able to catch this gift with both hands."
Attendance : 78,200
Assists : Balotelli, Balotelli (won fk)
STUTTGART 3 (Marica 5, Trasch 8, Pogrebnyak 11)
UNIREA URZIENI (Semedo 46)
Khedira's teasing cross that was begging to be hit and Marica duly obliged. Gebhart sprung a counter attack deep from his own half, he released Trasch and the defenders shot took a deflection off a gonorrhoea player,
wrong footing Arlauskis. Pogrebnyak turned onto a Khedira centre and dribbled away from two players before nutmegging Arlauskis. Brilliant goal. Midget Boka kicked the ball against his own trailing leg when trying to clear and Semedo ran through to score what proved to be a consolation goal.

STANDARD LIEGE 1 (Bolat 95)
AZ ALKMAAR 1 (Lens 42)
Dutch striker Lens met Pocognoli's cross with a spectacular mid-air flick volley. Standard's Turkish goalkeeper Bolat scored a devastating last second equaliser that knocked the Dutch champions out of Europe, meeting Nicaise's free kick with a superb header.
Attendance : 28,000
Assist : Pocognoli, Nicaise'

JUVENTUS 1 (Trezeguet 19)
BAYERN MUNICH 4 (Butt 30 Pen, Olic 52, Gomez 83, Tymoschuk 92)
Trezeguet volleyed Juve into the lead from a Marchisio cross, against the run of play. Olic dived to win the game tying penalty. No hint of bias from Sky's colour commentator who claimed it was "a definite penalty" idiot. Bayern goalkeeper Butt converted which was incredibly this THIRD GOAL against Juventus. Most strikers probably haven't scored three goals against Juve in Europe. Juve failed to clear their lines from a corner, Buffon parried Van Buyten's header and Olic tapped in the rebound. Trezeguet missed a glorious chance to equalise and Juve paid the price minutes later when the hulking Van Buyten again proved impossible to mark on a cross and Gomez put away the rebound. Muller touched back a Robben centre for Tymoschuk to blast in a fourth.
Juve are an embarrassment to Italian football, nothing new there.
Attendance : 27,500
Assists : Marchisio, Olic (won pen), n/a, Muller
MACCABI HAIFA 0
BORDEAUX 1 (Jussie 13)
Attendance : 17,500
Assist : Traore
BESIKTAS 1 (Bobo 86)
CSKA 2 (Krasic 41, Aldonin 95)
Krasic gave CKSA the lead against a pitiful Besiktas side on the break, cutting in from the left and beating Rustu with a brilliant shot into the right corner. Bobo found space between two defenders to convert Uzulmez's centre. In the dying seconds of injury time Necid flicked on a throw in and Rustu fumbled Aldonin's imminently saveable shot.
Attendance : 28,000
Assists : Semberas, Uzulmez, Necid
WOLFSBURG 1 (Dzeko 56)
MANCHESTER UNITED 3 (Owen 44, Owen 83, Owen 91)
Wolfsburg should be given a two year ban from all European competition for allowing the fraud Michael Owen to score a hat-trick. The first was a HEADER from a Nani cross. Dzeko headed in the equaliser against a makeshift United defence. Obertan turned two defenders inside out in the Wolfsburg box before rolling to the back post for Owen to tap-in. Owen completed his hat-trick on the break with an excellent lob over Benaglio.
Attendance : 29,000
Assists : Nani, n/a, Obertan, Obertan
ZURICH 1 (Gajic 29)
MILAN 1 (Ronaldinho 64 Pen)
Gajic gave Zurich the lead with a superb free kick. Borriello took a tumble in the box and Ronaldinho converted the penalty.
Attendance : 22,000
Assists : Gajic (won fk), Borriello (won pen)
MARSEILLE 1 (Lucho 11)
REAL MADRID 3 (Ronaldo 5 fk, Albiol 60, Ronaldo 80)
Ronaldo gave Real Madrid the lead with a fantastic free kick. Lucho punished Albiol for making a pathetic clearance to score a quick equaliser. A van der Vaart corner hit Ronaldo, possibly on the arm though it was clearly un-intentional and Albiol volleyed into the bottom right corner. Casillas fouled Niang to concede a penalty. He should have been sent off but, as usual with most goalkeepers, he got away with a yellow card. To make matters worse for Marseille Lucho blasted the spot kick against the underside of the crossbar. Mandanda rushed off his line to cut out a Diarra through ball, taking out Diawara and Ronaldo in the process, Ronaldo jumped to his feet and tapped into an empty net.
Jamie Redknapp claimed Ronaldo invented his free kick technique and other players like Drogba and JUNINHO have copied. No it was Juninho who invented the technique you stupid twat.
Attendance : 55,000
Assists : VDV (won fk), n/a, Ronaldo, n/a
ATLETICO MADRID 0
PORTO 3 (Alves 2, Falcao 14, Hulk 76)
Alves opened the scoring with a towering header from a corner. Asenjo spilled a Fucile centre and Falcao snared the rebound. Hulk put Pathetico Madrid out of their misery with a thunderous left foot shot which crashed in off the underside of the crossbar.
Attendance : 45,000
Assists : Meireles, n/a, Guarin
CHELSEA 2 (Essien 19, Drogba 26)
APOEL 2 (Zewtakow 6, Mirosavijevic 87)
Chelsea's worrying form continued with a poor showing against Apoel. The Cypriots took a shock lead after a lovely passing move was finished off by Zewtakow. Essien drew the Londoner's level with a typically powerful strike from the edge of the box which Chiotis should have saved. Kakuta and Zhirkov combined for Drogba's goal but Mikel's hospital pass was seized on by Mirosavijevic who ran away from the painfully slow Terry to equalise.
Attendance : 40,917
